I love the start of a new year. Its a fresh start, a clean slate and 15 days until my wedding anniversary (yay!). I have been thinking about what my new years resolutions will be for 2014 and began thinking about the good habits I already have. What if my biggest new years resolution is simply to continue the good patterns. I realize in life sometimes all we focus on is how we can better ourselves all while ignoring the achievements we reach. Think about this, perhaps our lives are better lived building upon the healthy patterns we create and slowly challenging ourselves rather than big promises of change with small long term success.
The truth is, we are likely to fail at most of our resolutions because they are too far out of our reach to begin with. We decide that come January we are going to begin exercising 5 days a week when in December we don’t have a workout schedule established at all. We vow to begin journaling every night when most nights we fall asleep browsing through our Facebook feed. We say we are going to save more money in the upcoming year yet we make a budget so unrealistic we don’t make it past the first month. These are all good resolutions, however, if they are not reflective of the state of our current lifestyle, they may not be successful. And then we become frustrated and discouraged, giving up on any attempts to change. So instead of making the typical, outlandish new years resolutions we do every year, why not try focusing on the habits that are good, healthy, and established already. How can we make those stronger this upcoming year? There’s a lot to be said about consistency and longevity. This new year, just keep going…
